Linear Bushes / LM Bearings

Linear Bushes, also known as LM Bearings (Linear Motion Bearings), are precision mechanical components designed to provide smooth, accurate, and low-friction linear motion along a hardened shaft. Unlike conventional rotary bearings, LM bearings enable movement in a straight line, making them essential in automation and precision machinery.

A standard linear bush consists of:

  • Hardened outer steel sleeve
  • Recirculating steel balls
  • Ball retainer/cage
  • End seals (in sealed models)
  • Precision inner raceway

The recirculating balls roll between the shaft and bearing body, significantly reducing friction and ensuring smooth, precise movement over long strokes. Typical recirculating-ball LM bearings run with very low friction compared with sliding contact and are designed for repeated, accurate linear travel.

Working principle of Linear Bushes / LM Bearings:

The working principle of Linear Bushes / LM Bearings is based on rolling contact using recirculating steel balls instead of sliding friction.

A hardened and precision-ground shaft passes through the inner bore of the linear bush. The shaft acts as the guide path for linear movement. Inside the bearing, multiple rows of hardened steel balls make contact with the shaft surface. These balls support the applied load. As the bearing moves along the shaft, the balls roll between the shaft and the bearing raceway, significantly reducing friction compared to conventional sliding bushes. After completing one rolling cycle, the balls move through internal return channels and re-enter the load zone continuously. This recirculating mechanism enables unlimited linear travel. The balls evenly distribute radial loads across the shaft, ensuring smooth movement, high accuracy, and minimal wear.
