What Are Bi-Metal Bushes?
Bi-metal bushes (also called bi-metallic bearings or composite bushes) are engineered plain bearings made by bonding two different metals together...

Key Features of Bi-Metal Bushes

Bi-metal bushes offer several performance advantages:

  • High Load Capacity Designed to handle heavy radial and oscillating loads.
  • Excellent Wear ResistanceAnti-friction lining reduces wear during prolonged operation.
  • Low Friction PerformanceEnsures smoother motion between moving parts.
  • Good Heat DissipationMetallic construction helps dissipate generated heat efficiently.
  • Shock & Impact ResistanceSuitable for applications with vibration and intermittent loads.
  • Dimensional StabilityMaintains shape and tolerance under demanding conditions.
  • Corrosion ResistanceCertain alloy combinations provide enhanced resistance to corrosion.
  • Long Service LifeReduced maintenance and replacement frequency.
Working Principle of Bi-Metal Bushes:

Bi-metal bushes operate on the principle of low-friction sliding contact combined with high load-bearing support. They are engineered using two different metal layers, each performing a specific function to ensure smooth, reliable motion in rotating or oscillating applications.

A typical Bi-Metal Bush consists of outer steel backing which provides mechanical strength, rigidity, and dimensional stability. The inner bearing layer is usually made of bronze, copper-lead, or aluminum alloy that offers low friction and wear resistance.

When a shaft rotates inside the bush, the inner bearing layer comes in contact with the shaft surface. As this layer has anti-friction properties, it minimizes direct metal-to-metal wear. With proper lubrication (oil or grease), a thin lubricant film forms between the shaft and bush. This film reduces friction, prevents excessive heat generation, minimizes wear and ensures smooth rotation or oscillation.

The bush distributes radial and sometimes axial loads evenly across its bearing surface. Steel backing absorbs heavy mechanical loads, while the softer bearing alloy adapts to minor shaft misalignment and surface irregularities. During operation, friction generates heat. The metallic layers help conduct and dissipate heat efficiently, maintaining stable operating temperatures. The inner bearing material can embed small dust particles and accommodate slight shaft imperfections, preventing scoring or seizure.

Application Industries of Bi-Metal Bushes

Bi-metal bushes are used across multiple industries:

  • Automotive IndustryUsed for Engine connecting rods, Suspension systems, Gearboxes, Steering assemblies Hydraulic pumps etc.
